About DanORC
The inspiration for DanORC
The inspiration to establish DanORC came from an article by the Danish Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Helge Sander, who in a Danish newspaper on December 8 2005 reflected on the research funding of coming years. Here he concluded: "Imagine if we already now had created an intense research co-operation between companies, research institutions and hospitals, that could make Denmark a frontier in regard to prevention of obesity and treatment of all related illnesses. What an improvement in the quality of lives it could bring. What possibilities to create a really good business."
Becoming a reality
Upon this Thorkild IA Sørensen, professor at the Institute of Preventive Medicine, initiated a co-operation between researchers from the scientific, clinical and industrial sectors working within the field of obesity in Denmark. An application for the establishment of a Danish Obesity Research Centre and obesity research targeting specific nutrients in food was handed in to the Danish Council for Strategic Research in 2006 and in the beginning of 2007 DanORC was a reality, formally based on a five-year funding from the Council (grant 2101-06-0005).

Today
DanORC has since developed into a large deinstitutionalized network of research groups from all over Denmark, each headed by acknowledged scientists within the field of obesity (see under ‘partners’), as well as a forum to educate young investigators in obesity research. The center is co-ordinated from the Institute of Preventive Medicine in Copenhagen.
