Abstract Obesity is more common among the less educated, suggesting education-related environmental triggers. Such triggers may act differently dependent on genetic and environmental predisposition to obesity. In a Danish Twin Registry survey, 21,522 twins of same-sex pairs provided zygosity, height, weight, and education data. Body mass index (BMI = kg weight/ m height2) was used to measure degree of obesity.
Abstract Epidemiological studies have shown an inverse relation between a whole grain consumption and risk of type-2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. One tentative mechanism relates to colonic metabolism of indigestible carbohydrates.
PURPOSE:The signals that govern the upregulation of nutrient absorption (adaptation) after intestinal resection are not well understood. A Gastric Roux-en-Y bypass (GRYB) model was used to isolate the relative contributions of direct mucosal stimulation by nutrients, biliary-pancreatic secretions, and systemic enteric hormones on intestinal adaptation in short bowel syndrome.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether habitual dietary intake was associated with body fat mass and body fat distribution, independently of possible confounding by the genetic and shared environmental background.
The GENDINOB project is funded by a grant from the Danish Strategic Research Council (Programme Committee for Health, Food and Welfare). The project may be summarised as follows: The current knowledge about gene loci and obesity and diet and obesity, respectively, indicates that further progress in our understanding requires studies in which both gene loci and the dietary factors are included. The newly found 20+ gene loci associated with obesity contribute very little to explain the known genetic variation.
